A few days after setting sail from Beaumont, Texas, the ship vanished off the coast of Florida without as much as a single radio message. The main protagonist in this story is Allie. She also thinks of herself as the mother of the many children stuck in this world, being one of the oldest inhabitants at fifteen. Lief was the first one to speak of the McGill. She also lied about the coins that Afterlights brought with them to Everlost being useless—she knew it was the key to Afterlights going into the light and wanted them to stay with her in Everlost instead.
She explains how she got on the ship and then is ordered to teach the McGill how to skinjack. The easy answer was that the McGill kept everything…but the real answer was that the coins were the most plentiful objects in Everlost, and as such were of special interest to him.

It took me more than fifty years, but I wanted to be back on the surface again, and when you want something badly enough, you can do anything.
