Super talented, nice, intelligent and empathetic workers and people. Great opportunities to advance and try new things if you fit the mold and have the connections with Sr Leaders. Can be a hard place to break through or do anything. Overwhelming meeting and consensus driven culture - never leaves time to do the work. Resistant to focusing on the hard things and Sr. Leaders don't seem to have the knowledge or appetite to "fix" the system and keep asking for more.
A bit Exhausting to continue to try and stay energized without the real tools, pay or empowerment. Pros Mission-driven, great people, nice benefits , cool gear. An okay job, but not a career. REI is an above average place to work as a job, but not a career. Probably a great first job for someone starting out. No real advancement opportunities, as they really like to hire externally for any kind of promotions.
Management plays favorites a lot. Issues get continuously reported with changes of any kind taking years, if at all. When it gets slow, they cut hours, so although they have vacation paid days, you will end up using them all up to keep your pay consistent from month to month, and that still won't be enough.
They theoretically have a weekend rotation where you can have alternate weekends off, or every Sun, or every Sat, but it is "subject to business need" so guess what happens when it gets busy. They have regular pay increases, but it does not account for inflation, so in real world terms the pay increases are just pennies. Pros Remote, employee discount, benefits. Cons Pay, lack of advancement. They were never able to promise me the hours that they told me I would get at the beginning of the job.
I was very disappointed. Truly a let down. I love the company and what they stand for. Pros Great Company and Benefits. Cons Not full time. Management and coworkers are supportive and kind. Great pay and benefits. Opportunities for advancement if you are looking for it. Company really stands by their principles. Great social outlet for someone working in another field or a student. I started for the social aspect and stayed for the benefits.
Best as a part time gig. Not a great long term career move, but good if you like people and being on your feet all day on hard concrete floors. Also great if you need some high end outdoor gear.
Pros Health insurance at 20 hours. Cons Must work a full year at this range first. Also, pay is not great. Jobs at REI. They need to generate profits at any cost, grow at any cost. But when customers are owners, their interest is not solely about earnings.
We have to control our top-line growth and expenses and be accountable for a bottom line that is not only going to pay the dividend to our owners but also show a profit at the end of the year.
Outdoor-equipment retailing is very competitive, and we have to operate this business with the same rigor that a traditionally organized business does. How do you talk to employees about their concerns? I spend most of my time staying in front of employees, engaging them in dialogues.
So we leave three-by-five-inch index cards and pencils taped to every chair in the auditorium. Employees can write their questions, the cards are collected and brought up, and we answer them on the spot. This type of forum can put you on the hot seat, but it certainly opens up communication and builds trust. I get hundreds of questions a month from employees all over the country. And some of these questions have ultimately led to policy changes.
REI was a pioneer in on-line retailing. Any Web blunders along the way? I was very enthusiastic about the Web, and the company jumped in with both feet. In general, on-line retailing has been phenomenally successful for us.
Our Web-based sales were doing so well that we decided to discontinue our catalogs in and send customers directly to the Internet. Boy, did we hear about that! And so we scrambled to reinstate the catalogs. The lesson is to be careful not to get too far ahead of your customers. Be measured. I worked at three different REI stores over 4.
But mostly, this company attracts people who drink the outdoors punch. And the company is pretty woke too. Pros Employee discount. Cons Working holidays.
It is a good atomsphere, and better then most retail. It is definitely still retail however. Its not very rewarding, as far as personal development in my opinion. Pay is not bad though! Pros Discounts, friendly customers and staff, good pay. Cons Mundane. I believe this company values its employees. They work with you on your schedule if something comes up.
If you have issues with a coworker you never have to go up high then your immediate boss. Pros Free fountain drink, great management.
