Former Liverpool midfielder and current Rangers manager Steven Gerrard celebrates his 40th birthday this weekend. One of the greatest midfielders of all-time. Happy birthday, Steven Gerrard.
For me, Steven Gerrard is the best English midfielder in Premier League history and this article explains why this is the case. Whilst there is alot of bias when Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea fans voice their opinions on the debate, i feel that there are more than a few genuine reasons as to why Steven Gerrard is the best of the three. First of all, people always refer to the Gerrard slip and how he has never won the Premier League as a reason for him not being the best of the three.
If that were a true reason to devalue Gerrard then people are calling Anderson and Nani better players, with better careers than Gerrard. Is Wayne Rooney better than Shearer? Noone has ever said this but yet Rooney has won alot more trophies. However, everyone knows that Gerrard would have won plenty of league titles with Man United or Chelsea. Whilst Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard were also amazing players, Gerrard took so many games by the scruff of the neck in the biggest of occasions.
Remember this? That same season would see Liverpool go on to win the Champions League final in a truly exceptional fashion. On this day 15 years ago, Steven Gerrard carried his team back from down in a Champions League final against that legendary AC Milan team at the age of He really was the complete midfielder.
Gerrard set up Djibril Cisse to make it and would then score an equaliser to make the game and then after Paul Konchesky scored to make it to West Ham, Gerrard scored an injury time equalizer just as he did against Olympiacos, this time from 35 yards.
He is on top of his game; a personal record of 24 goals in all competitions speaks for itself. He would, of course, see and feel greater recognition if he won a World or European cup, yet his profile quickly rose when winning the Champions League in He was also illegally robbed for the Ballon d'Or in , seen as the prize is based on what a player has achieved.
Yet once again, European journalists continue their bias towards England. So what do you think? Is Steven Gerrard the world's best or merely just good? Have your say. Enjoy our content? Few players come to represent a club quite like Steven Gerrard symbolises Liverpool. Gerrard won nine trophies across a year playing career for the Reds, scoring goals in an amazing appearances, but it was the intangibles that made him special: the ability to grab a team by the scruff of the neck and single-handedly drag them to glory — never more evident than that famous night in Istanbul.
The biggest compliment I can give him is he is second only to Zinedine Zidane in terms of his world-class status. He helped me a lot during my early days with England. You make the run into the space and however tightly marked he is, he finds a way to get the ball through in perfect condition.
When you add his energy, toughness, leadership and goalscoring ability and the result is a fantastic all-round player. He is without doubt the greatest player I have ever played with, he has everything. Not just irreplaceable as a player but also as a captain, and what he represents for Liverpool. His story is one of those stories to be told, one of those fairytales, to be narrated to your children and grandchildren.
Anyone would love to have Gerrard in their team. Gerrard is a complete player because he can play in every position and can do everything with a football at any time in a game. He has been loyal to his club, he has won some big trophies with the club. He feels more an international player rather than a normal English player.
He has more skills than the normal player. Because we had this challenge between ourselves in and , I really admire him. Of course, Lampard was pretty amazing, Scholes the classic.
