Here it is clearly artistic intent. Shimizu ups the gore, but he is still most convincing when he scares us by inaction rather than action. He is a master of drawing out that unbearable moment when we just know something very bad will happen very soon. The characteristic creaking sound has been present in the earlier productions, but it is used most effectively here.
It will haunt you in your sleep, probably for the rest of your life. This year a total of films were selected from a record 29, admissions. Produced under Melanin Unscripted, a platform aiming to shine a spotlight…. The ancient capital witnessed a drop of 88 percent in inbound…. Bonsai artisan and horticulturist Yoshinobu Tabata says that his work has no end.
Around horse-riding flag-bearing samurai warriors in armor sprinting across the fields is a sight that warps all sense of reality. But it opens a convincing portal to the past for three…. All major horror franchises have their definitive high points and low points, and The Grudge is no different.
Here are all The Grudge movies ranked, worst to best. The Grudge 3 was the third American remake in the franchise, but was the first and only to be released direct-to-video.
Shawnee Smith Saw starred as Dr. Sullivan, but even her formidable acting chops and penchant for success in horror films couldn't revive the film. The other two films in the American remake series set the bar high enough that The Grudge 3 seemed dull, lifeless, and lackluster in comparison, and brought nothing new that audiences hadn't already seen many times before.
Ju-On: The Grudge 2 was also written and directed by Shimizu, and was only released a year after his first Ju-On: The Grudge movie, adding to the rich franchise that he was already building with the overall universe and series.
While it was a good effort, it strongly reiterated many of the points of the first and seemed half-baked. One year is a very quick turnaround, and because of this, it seemed like Shimizu got too focused on what worked with the first, therefore leaving the second repetitive and boring. The newest installment in The Grudge franchise has gotten majorly negative reviews, and some of the worst that the franchise has experienced.
The cast is enjoyable, the movie looks super-stylish and, best of all, Sadako and Kayako — even in amongst all this comic-book chaos — have their creepiness back. They turn into the spectral equivalents of kaiju by the end but both of their first appearances in the film gave me goosebumps of residual fear. The marketing campaign for the film in Japan was hilarious, including a fantastic Instagram account and a tie-in with Hello Kitty. However, much like its own eternal death curse, the Ju-On franchise is showing no sign of stopping any time soon.

The Grudge 2 With The Grudge remake grossing nearly 20 times its budget at the box office, a sequel was greenlit straight away, and Shimizu was back at the controls.
The Grudge 3 Sadly, 10 years on from the original shorts, Takashi Shimizu drew a line under things and decided not to return to the franchise for a third American Grudge. Ju-On: The Beginning of the End No one asked for it but Masayuki Ochiai known for second-tier J-Horror pics like Shutter and Infection decided to reboot the franchise in with a pair of films he felt would make a fitting end to the story.
Ju-On: The Final Curse Masayuki Ochiai and Takashige Ichise brought their retconned mythos back for a second outing that goes further down the rabbit hole, recasting Toshio as an actual devil child who is the centre of the curse, with Kayako his enabler and Takeo somehow now a victim.
