The following animals are considered small game: squirrels, rabbits, northern bobwhite quail and grouse. Only rabbits and squirrels may be trapped. Quail and grouse may not be trapped. Hunting bag limits apply. Trapping equipment and restrictions are the same as those listed in the furbearer section. Trappers must harvest squirrels and rabbits upon capture, unless they possess a captive wildlife permit from Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.

Resident and nonresident youth hunters and trappers ages 15 and younger may hunt and trap small game without a hunting or trapping license for seven consecutive days starting the Saturday after Christmas.
Hunter orange clothing must be worn by all hunters during the first weekend after Christmas, as youth hunters are also permitted to hunt deer with firearms at that time. Youth hunters must comply with all equipment regulations and bag limits for small game when hunting or trapping. Hunter education is not required for license-exempt hunters.
The limit for this hunting method is two 2 of any small game or furbearer species per falconer per day, except during the fall and winter hunting season when the limits are the same as for other methods. Hunters are encouraged to wear a face covering, eye protection and surgical-type gloves when field dressing or processing a deer out of an abundance of caution amid the pandemic.

Then a hot and dry June was followed by a soggy July. Biologists point to the cold and late snowfall as culprits contributing to the drop in the number of rabbits and quail observed by the mail carriers.
Rabbits begin nesting in late February and their breeding season can continue into late summer. The peak hatch for quail occurred in July, so the heavy rain that month likely hurt chick survival in spots. You move into parts of central Kentucky and the numbers seem to be down. You keep going farther east and up to Clay WMA in Nicholas, Fleming and Bath counties and throughout the summer they were seeing broods all over the ground.
It seems like kind of an odd year. The East Region from Lewis County down to Wayne County and points east led the state in the number of rabbits observed by the mail carriers. The region also produced a year-over-year increase in the number of quail observed along the delivery routes. For the next couple of years, it may be an area that folks want to target if they can get access to some of these properties.
