Thanks for sharing. People just cant believe its true. And the internet says the idea is nuts. But fresh onions in the room, and or a pot of steaming onions boiled in water will really get thru congestion.
As well as onions laid on chest and in socks. I would also add…. Viruses and bacteria cannot penetrate a wall. Snopes is an unreliable fact checking source. They hold bias views and have barely one researcher. But thanks for your input. And so, I think your opinion that onions absorbs toxins is based off of personal experience right?
Hi, My name is Nicole and I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your information on onions. I have 9 children,6 girls still at home. Some of them are sick with a cold now and so am I. A friend told me today about the health benefits of onions. It took quite a bit to find your information. So thank you for sharing. I will let you know what happens when they wake up tomorrow.
With love and blessings Nicole. When I was a kid I was always very sickly. Always had colds, coughs and all sorts of other maladies. And even into my adult life, When I was a teacher I was the one who always got sick 1st and then my kids got sick.
No matter where I traveled…to Seattle to visit my daughter, to a vacation in Brazil, …I always carried a face mask to wear in airports. A little over 5 or 6 years ago I discovered something that has been a lifesaver.
I keep a whole unpeeled red onion in a dish on top of my refrigerator and I even put 1 in my bedroom. The onion sits in its dish and eventually will grow green sprouts and over the months will eventually rot. Depending on the size of your onion it should last at least 4 or 5 months before it needs to be replaced.
Believe it or not, I have not had the flu, head or chest cold or sore throat, in over 5 years. This is another way people can help themselves. Sending you love and light! Years ago I new an elderly lady who each night slept with spring onions in her ears, I was Young at the time, and thought she was crackers, but I think she was drawing infection or wax from her ears, wide woman ways.
Spelling correction! Wise not wide, wise woman ways. Also I have used onions to soak up bad smells that are hard to get rid of, and they do work. Instead, if there is any benefit to this it is the breathing of onion fumes, which is my hypothesis the thing you are looking to prove or disprove with scientific research on how the onion treatment works.
When onion fumes come in contact with water in your eyes they burn because the onion fumes turn to sulfuric acid. Acid kills infection. Next time you are sick, cut up some onions, put them in a bag and immediately breath in the fumes via your mouth and nose. Do this every hour or two the first day you feel sick, maybe leave some cut up onions in a bowl next to your bed as you sleep that evening…see how your are in the morning, maybe continue on until the third day of your illness…at that point you need to rely on your immune system.
My experience has been very mild respiratory infections but it does not shorten the period of the overall typical cold. It just seems to have the effect of reducing the impact of a respiratory infection…. Only the direct application of freshly cut open onion fumes to the mouth, throat, lungs and nose seem to make a difference with the respiratory infection.
Also, I must caution the reality of the fact you would be, in effect, inhaling a sulfuric acid mist into your lungs. Conceptually treatment is similar in method for how those zinc cold remedies are supposed to work, by killing infections in the nose, mouth and throat.
Anyway, good luck out there and avoid making assumptions. Hi, thank you for your response. The home actually smelling like onions is really irrelevant to what the onions are doing. Make sense? Tq for ur article n yes I v used this remedy whole my life as my mom thought me n it even works if u v loose motion just pound small onion n mix with a bit of salt n v 1 spoon twice a day n it works for fever too.
Growing up in England my dad would cut onions half here half there around the house when cold season was around and yes it worked I thought as a kid oo but they did the job good old fashioned remedies. Then when I would get a bad sore throat mum would put a few bacon rashers on my neck for about 24 hours with a scarf yes that worked loved reading your article thankyou.
I ended up not buying the yellow, or white, but the sweet onion. Does it make a huge difference? I have also cut it in half, and sat one half beside my bed where my 12 week old newborn and I sleep is that okay? Thank you!
Sweet onions are ok! Keep me posted. I always leave several onion slices on night stand when me or my son get a cold, it seems to help every time.
Just other day was told by friends that it is too weird. Cool to find more people doing it. Hi Luba, I totally get what you mean, I get the side eye too from people but I just ignore it.
It works and is super helpful. Most people will eventually come around to it. I mean yes, the smell of the onion is pungent at first but we get use to it, lol.
It worked for me my throat feels better. I slept w an onion by my bed. Before that I gargled w an onion salt and water God told me to put it in the water.
It was effective. I love you. You are a badass. Mother, writer, person- i think you rock. Adjusting sucks.
The onion trick just saved my ass. My kids and man had it- not me. I had onions in my bra. Hi Winfrey, thank you so much for your kind comment! Sending healing vibes and prayers for a speedy recovery. I have just been told about placing onions around the house but this particular lady never cuts hers and swears they are working. Should they be cut? They would be rancid to eat for anyone if they absorbed uncut.
I am 30 weeks pregnant and super congested. My daughter came home and told me that her teacher mentioned that onions absorb bacteria etc. Being that im not allowed to take regular allergy or sinus meds, i humored her and placed a large sliced Spanish onion on my night stand under an hour ago. I cant beleive that i can now breathe more comfortably and i am much less stuffed. I plan to leave the onion out here overnight to reap the benefits.
Thanks for your informative article. Stay well! Hi Melissa, so sorry you were feeling a bit under the weather and happy to know the onion helped! I keep them around my home during flu season or just generally whenever anyone comes down with a bug. You can throw them away after they look dried out and replace it with a new one. The smell is pungent at first but subsides after a while as you get use to it.
Feel better and Congrats on your baby!! It looks as if it blocked her nose and her throat. She vomits when coughing. Please what should I do. Hope your baby is feeling better! I run a home daycare and I am going to try this for sure!!
I am constantly catching colds and so are the children, especially with it being cold and flu season! I am curious, how often do you change the onions out?
I just cut one in half and put a half in my living room and a half in the kitchen! Hi Michelle, I throw mine out once they look super dried out. Then I replace it with a fresh onion. You can put them anywhere like end tables in your living room, on your desk, and just keep refreshing them when they dried out. I remember when I was a little girl in the 70s and was sick a lot, she would cut up an onion and put it under my bed.
Usually my fever would break just like your little one and I feel better the next day. I believe they work. Old folks had knowledge passed down from generations. Modern medicine is good but I stick to home remedies when possible. Yeah, onions do get dry if you leave them out, cut in two, overnight. Try doing it on a night when you are not ill — same result.
Hi James, I actually do this year round, when we are sick or not sick because we are constantly be bombarded with toxins whether it be bacterial, viral, or environmental. We have tons of things in our air and all around us that the onions pick up. You should try it some time, it works whether you choose to believe it does or not. What you are doing is a good thing. He had gotten sick and went to the infirmary. The old military doctor had him lay down for minutes with a poultice on his forehead.
Afterwards, the doctor instructed the young soldier to go straight home to bed. He was given the warning that if he did anything to exert himself it would make him feel as if the top of his head would burst. Walking back to the barracks he had to go up a hill. The discharge had the foulest stench to it which caused himself and other pedestrians to cross to the other side of the street.
It was several years before he ever got sick again. Have you ever heard of such a poultice? That is why we need people like you to be doing what you are doing.
