Skyrim what kind of mage

Earlier, it was said that buying the highest, learnable spells was key for mages, and that does hold true. However, that doesn't mean the player should only ever cast the strongest spells. That's because the highest spells usually demand a lot of Magicka, allowing the player to only cast them a few times in combat before being out of Magicka entirely. It's much better instead to open up with single high-level spells and follow it up with spammy lower-level spells that demand less Magicka.

For example, open the fight with an Adept level spell, then pelt the enemy with Apprentice or Novice spells, until the Magicka regenerates itself. Since mages are extremely squishy compared to other builds and rely on a limited pool of resources to do damage the Magicka pool , fights should be taken on with a plan in mind.

Running into battle head first is a terrible idea for a mage that's unable to tank damage upfront. Players should prepare for a fight with potions, summoning an Atronach or any other helper, as well as equipping the first spells they want to start off with, such as Oakflesh. These choices are heavily dependent on the schools of magic the player has unlocked, but in general, the player should have a plan for both the offensive and defensive. Speaking of summoning creatures, since mages like to sit in the back and do damage from afar, they significantly benefit from having tankier characters and creatures take most of the damage for them and distract the enemy.

The best way to do this is to invest in the Conjuration skill tree or hire a follower. Conjuration lets players summon all sorts of creatures, like Atronachs, to fight for them for a set amount of time. Followers are also a fantastic option, and if they're marked as essential characters, they're even better since they're practically immortal. Followers who are mages or archers are terrible choices. Every available race in Skyrim has some sort of blurb that describes the kind of class they are best suited for in combat, with human races generally being better at melee combat while the beast races are considered the best at stealth gameplay.

The elven races , particularly the High Elf and Dark Elf, are generally seen as the best of the best when it comes to creating a mage, though this isn't the case in Skyrim.

While High Elves do have the Highborn ability that allows them to regenerate Magicka more quickly, Bretons, a humanoid race, has the inherent ability to resist all magic as well as absorb any incoming magic. As cool as the Destruction skill is, it's not the most reliable in terms of damage output.

While spells like Fireball and Chain Lightning can deal significant damage, the way enemies scale to the player's level, particularly at higher difficulties, means that these spells will do less and less damage as time goes on.

For the most part, it is best to combine Destruction with other Mage class skills, such as Conjuration or the school of Illusion , in order to make up for this lack of power at higher levels. Many players who jump into the Mage class will try to use magic skills for just about everything and ignore the use of certain items, such as staves, shields, or weapons, in order to maintain a pure build.

This is something that can be done in other fantasy RPGs, but in Skyrim , this will only set the player up for failure. Powerful relics like the Staff of Magnus and Dragon Priest masks are great additions to any mage-centric build , as they can not only give the player another avenue of skills to use but also enhance the skills that they are more focused on. Preferring to use their extensive knowledge of Magic , Mages wield a might as powerful as the sharpest blade or the deadliest mace.

Mages spend many years studying schools of the arcane arts, leaving behind most other pursuits. Depending on their magical abilities for offensive and defensive power, mages are typically lacking in armor or shields and utilize limited to no physical weaponry.

Destruction is used to create elemental attacks, thus being used as an offensive form of magic to defeat foes. It is almost essential to any mage that plays an offensive role.

Generally, destruction magic is split into three types of spells : fire , frost , and shock. Conjuration is used to summon powerful creatures and weapons from the planes of Oblivion.

It may also be used to raise the dead and steal souls of the living as they die. Restoration magic is focused on creating and harnessing life force, thus it is commonly used for healing wounds. It also has spells called Wards , which can be used to reduce the damage inflicted by enemy spells, just like a shield would block an enemy blow.

I've played a bunch of mages but my favorite is the good ol' bash 'n fry. Shield mage. Bash with shield, then melt their faces off, or conversely, freeze or shock their faces off.

It's not a subtle mage, and it just consists of 4 basic skills; block, destruction, alteration, and restoration. I usually grab the atronach stone or that plus the lord stone with the Aetherial crown and you become a magic tank. Weapons are optional. You can still mess with Conjuration and Illusion if you want as the basic skillset is extremely low.

No enchanting, smithing, or alchemy are necessary as there is plenty of equipment that fits the build well. Shield charge never gets old, and with Spellbreaker with Restoration's ward absorb, you're nearly invinsible. One of my favorite mage builds has always been the battlemage since it combines magic and combat together to create a class that overcomes several shortcomings that would normally hinder a mage's development regarding how to function in battle.

Pure mages are also good as they use all five of the magic schools for variety and maybe Enchanting as well if they want to put enchantments on their robes to increase the amount of magicka they have or how fast it can regenerate in addition to other magic related enchantments that can be applied on jewelry too. You could also create a class that's unique since the ideas behind it haven't been fully explored in other RPGs or not explored just yet, plus you can look to other RPGs. I'll give two examples by going over a couple of my own mage-styled characters briefly.

In other words, this build blends skills from each of the main specializations combat, magic, and stealth into a class that's unique because it feels like a new concept that hasn't been present in other RPGs since the main focus in those games involved common classes.

Another mage build I made is based on a class from the Fire Emblem series. It's known as the Mage Knight, a class similar to the battlemage. Mage Knights in Fire Emblem rode horses and wielded Anima tomes with swords or staves depending on the installment. The build in Skyrim relies on supportive magic such as Alteration and Restoration and mainly swords for offense.

It doesn't really matter too much what kind of mage build you want since Skyrim doesn't place restrictions on how you want to play. You could play as one of the common builds, or create a unique build that's either based on something else or completely original.

Whatever mage you decide to go with check out a mod on nexus called Black Mage Armor. Lots of cool mage gear you can craft and it's all black.

You also get an additional Black Archmage set once you become Archmage. Lapis View Profile View Posts. Night blade - use a dager and stealth with the free hand any illusion spell of your choosing make them fight each other as you watch in the shadows and since your stealthy you can pick them off one by one as you watch your enemies tear ech other apart its loads of fun.

Resto, mace, like a DnD cleric. Heavy into Dawnguard play to get the best resto spells. No cutting or stabbing weapons. Sort of a Paladin, heavy or light armor, your choice, but no deadric anything. And starting as a Breton, I get a particular advantage with Conjuration.

It's very helpful being able to summon in an Atronach to help me and my companion out in battles. Sometimes I don't have to do much myself, my Atronach takes care of most the enemies for me. View Profile View Posts.
